Any allergy can be a nuisance, but what do you do when you're allergic
to your best friend? James Li, M.D., an allergy and asthma specialist at Mayo
Clinic, Rochester, Minn., discusses this common trigger for allergies - your
pets.
Yes, if the animal is present indoors, the problem exists year-round. Which pet provokes the strongest symptoms? It seems that cat allergies are the most common problem. They can provoke
quite serious allergic reactions, particularly asthmatic-type reactions, in
those most sensitive. Do you advise people with allergies to get rid of their dog or cat? I often do. I think the first step is to try to establish that the pet is
the problem as clearly and as firmly as possible. Most people with an allergy
to a pet already have a pretty good idea that the pet is causing the problem.
Their doctor can confirm that, with as much certainty as possible, through
allergy testing - usually allergy skin tests, but occasionally with blood
testing as well. Are pet allergies a year-round problem?
Do allergic reactions to animals typically follow quickly after exposure, so
it's fairly easy to identify the culprit? With the most sensitive people, symptoms can develop within 5 to 15 minutes
after exposure. Some people may experience a delayed reaction that occurs a few
hours after exposure. Does keeping the offending pet out of the house make a difference? It does. If an indoor pet is causing an allergy problem for a member of the
family, it is usually recommended that the animal be outside the house all the
time. Once you've put your pet outside, what can you do to remove remaining pet
allergens from your home? Although there's no foolproof way to remove pet allergens from your home,
there are things you can do to reduce remaining allergens once the pet is
removed. For example: Even if the animal is outside, can its dander be brought back into the house
by children who play with it outside, for example? That can happen. Even when the animal stays outside, exposure can be a
problem for a highly sensitive person. What if, for example, I'm very attached to a pet and just can't bear to have
it outside at all times? Are there any techniques to control pet allergies even
when the pet is inside? Part of my advice depends on how sensitive you are and how severe your
reactions are. But generally there's no substitute for keeping the animal out of
the house. Particularly with more severe allergic reactions, there's nothing as
effective as removing the offending animal from the household - and I advise
that. Even then, of course, some people don't follow that recommendation. In
these cases, allergy medications may help control the person's symptoms. For
asthma, that would typically include a variety of inhalers, including steroid
inhalers as well as other types of asthma medicine. For hay fever (allergic
rhinitis) and inflammation of portions of the eye and eyelid (conjunctivitis),
that would include antihistamines, steroid-containing nasal sprays,
antihistamine eyedrops or a combination of these. Sometimes the strategy backfires in more sensitive people. Because the
medicines relieve symptoms, a person may end up having a longer exposure to the
animal. Later, however, the longer exposure can lead to a more pronounced
allergic reaction.
