Other names
Ginkgo biloba, maidenhair-tree.
Popular uses
Ginkgo is used to treat symptoms connected with decreased blood flow to the brain, particularly in elderly people. These symptoms include short-term memory loss and dizziness. Other symptoms that ginkgo is used to treat include ringing in the ears, headache, depression, erectile dysfunction and anxiety. Circulation problems in the legs also have responded to ginkgo. Only concentrated gingko extract is used. Gingko leaves contain only small quantities of the active ingredients.
What the research shows
Numerous studies suggest that ginkgo provides modest benefit for people with established dementia. Studies have not demonstrated any benefit to taking gingko as a preventive measure to avoid the development of Alzheimer's or dementia. Nor is there evidence that gingko enhances normal memory. In fact, the results of a 6-week study published in the August 21, 2002, issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association indicate that ginkgo does not improve learning, memory, attention and concentration in elderly adults with normal cognitive function. More studies are needed, however, on the effect of long-term use.
Possible side effects
Muscle spasms, allergic skin reactions, cramps, bleeding, mild digestive problems.
Cautions
Don’t use it if you’re taking anticlotting medication — including taking aspirin regularly. Mayo Clinic doctors recommend you avoid using ginkgo if you’re taking a thiazide diuretic. Ginkgo may raise blood pressure if used with this drug. Don’t take it if you’re pregnant. Discontinue taking gingko at least 7 days prior to surgery.
