Latin name
Zingiber officinale
Popular uses
Ginger is usually taken to relieve nausea and indigestion. Some people also
use ginger to treat the pain associated with arthritis. The medicinal part
of the plant is the root.
What the research shows
Studies show ginger may be effective for preventing nausea associated
with seasickness, motion sickness and anesthesia. Take 30 minutes prior to
any activity that may cause these types of nausea. However, one study found
ginger to be helpful in treating people who were already seasick.
No research supports using it to treat or prevent nausea associated with chemotherapy.
It's effectiveness as a treatment for arthritis pain needs further investigation.
Possible side effects
Heartburn, increased taste sensitivity.
Cautions
Not recommended for morning sickness, especially if you have a history of
bleeding disorders or miscarriage. May cause bleeding or impair fetal development.
However, more conclusive data is needed. Small amounts of ginger used to flavor
food are generally recognized as safe for pregnant women.
If you have gallstones, talk to your doctor before using. Ginger increases the production of digestive juices and bile.
If you're anticipating surgery, stop taking ginger 2 to 3 weeks before surgery. Ginger may increase your risk of bleeding if you take it regularly.
