Latin names
Echinacea species: Three types — Echinacea purpurea, Echinacea pallida, Echinacea angustifolia
Other names
Purple coneflower, rudbeckia, Sampson root.
Popular uses
Echinacea is typically used for colds and influenza. It’s also used to help heal wounds and for fungal infections.
What the research shows
Studies show Echinacea purpurea and Echinacea pallida probably don’t prevent colds and influenza. However, they may shorten the duration and frequency. Echinacea angustifolia has no documented therapeutic benefits. Studies show Echinacea purpurea may effectively treat some urinary tract infections and wounds. More is known about the effectiveness of Echinacea’s leaves than its roots.
Possible side effects
Intestinal upset, diarrhea, skin rash if used topically. With habitual use, it may suppress your immune system.
Cautions
Don’t take echinacea for more than 8 weeks at a time. It can be toxic to your liver.
Because it stimulates your immune system, don’t take echinacea if you
have diabetes, multiple sclerosis, leukemia, human immunodeficiency virus
(HIV) or autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis or lupus.
With habitual use, echinacea may overstimulate and then suppress your immune system. Recent studies indicate that with long-term use, echinacea may suppress T cells — a type of white blood cell that helps fight infection.
Avoid taking it if you’re allergic to the daisy family, including ragweed, chamomile and chrysanthemum.
Avoid taking it if you’re pregnant.
