Latin name
Capsicum annuum
Other names
Chili pepper, paprika, red pepper.
Popular uses
Cream containing cayenne is used to relieve joint pain. It's also
used to relieve muscle spasms and pain from shingles, phantom pain after amputation
and pain from nerve damage caused by complications from diabetes (neuropathy).
Capsaicin, the active ingredient in cayenne, is thought to work by depleting
your nerve cells of a chemical called substance P that's important for sending
pain messages.
Cayenne is also taken orally for gastrointestinal problems, such as stomach cramps, gas and indigestion. It apparently stimulates gastrointestinal secretions in the digestive tract. It can also increase nasal secretions.
What the research shows
Studies support cayenne's use as a pain reliever. It seems to be most effective
in treating pain in joints close to your skin's surface, such as fingers,
knees and elbows. It may have therapeutic benefits for gastrointestinal problems.
However, more research is needed.
Possible side effects
Typically none with proper use. However, if you experience any adverse side
effects or reactions, see your doctor.
Cautions
Keep cream away from your eyes, nose and mouth. Wash your hands thoroughly
after applying cream. Avoid applying cream to broken skin because it can irritate
the wound.
When taken orally, cayenne can cause cramps and diarrhea. High doses over long periods can cause chronic stomach or nerve problems or damage to your kidneys or liver.

and dried, liquid extract.
Typical dosage
